Adobe and ARM form mobile web alliance
Nov 19, 2008 (Datamonitor via COMTEX) --
Adobe Systems has collaborated with UK-based chip designer ARM to jointly offer enhanced web services to ARM-based devices including cellphones and set-top boxes.
US-based Adobe plans to port Flash Player 10 and Adobe AIR for mobile phones to the ARM architecture. Handset makers including Nokia, Samsung, Apple, and Research in Motion use processors designed by ARM.
The project is part of Adobe's Open Screen initiative that aims to boost the use of Flash in the handheld market. The company currently offers Flash Lite, a stripped-down version of Flash for mobile phones. The company plans to continue supporting Flash Lite for low-end devices, and Flash 10 on high-end devices.
Gary Kovacs, general manager and vice president of mobile and devices at Adobe, said: "Adobe Flash is the leading video format on the web today, and this collaboration with ARM is another important step towards bringing the complete web experience to mobile devices worldwide. We are pleased to work with ARM and the other industry leaders in the Open Screen Project, to make browsing and applications as rich and powerful in mobile as they are on the desktop."
