6 Employees arrested for embezzling from Paraguayan phone co.
Asuncion, Dec 15, 2009 (EFE via COMTEX) --
Paraguayan police on Tuesday arrested
six employees of the local subsidiary of Mexican mobile telephone
company America Movil for the embezzlement of some 1.6 billion
guaranies ($348,000).
Police inspector Gilberto Fleitas told radio Ñanduti that the
Claro employees have been charged with "diversion of a certain
percent of the money taken in since last March."
The arrested people "were caught red-handed after the
simultaneous checks made on the cash balances at several (Claro)
offices" in Asuncion, Fleitas said.
"There exists the presumption that there could be other (illicit)
behavior and greater damage," company attorney Jorge Bogarin told
the same radio station.
Claro is a subsidiary brand of America Movil, the property of
Mexican magnate Carlos Slim, and it has been operating under that
name since last year in several Latin American countries.
It established itself in Paraguay in mid-2005 under the name of
CTI Movil after buying Porthable from the Hutchison Wampoa
consortium. EFE
