5 minutes with Peter Yabsley [DigitalProductionME.com]

(DigitalProductionME.com Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Digital Studio caught up with Peter Yabsley, professional products marketing team leader, Canon Europe, to discuss new products and trends in the Middle East market.

DB: What have been the most significant developments from your company in the past 12 months? We are constantly evolving our product range and the last 12 months has seen the launch of a number of very exciting additions to our portfolio. Most notably perhaps is the DP-V3010 – our 30-inch reference display specifically designed for colour grading and high quality 4K video production, as well as the CN7x17 KAS S, the first in a brand new line up of lenses specifically designed to support the growing requirements of broadcasters using large-sensor cameras.

DB: What exciting plans do you have for the next 12 months, especially in terms of the Middle East market? Obviously we can't talk about any specific future product plans but we're certainly excited about introducing our latest products – including the new CN7x17 cine servo lens and the XF205 and XF200 HD camcorders – to the Middle Eastern market. Our local team will be working across the region to meet with customers and end users, and Canon will be present at a variety of different industry events including CABSAT 2015.

DB: What do you think is the biggest opportunity for your company in the Middle East? Many of the industry shifts that have happened in European markets such as HD, tapeless production and large sensor acquisition tools, are still in their early stages in the Middle East, but there's no doubt that the pace of change will accelerate in all of these areas. Canon offers an extensive range of HDTV lenses and all models in our professional video camera line-up now offer tapeless HD recording, so we see ourselves as ideally placed to capitalise on these developments. The announcement made at IBC 2013 about Al-Jazeera's purchase of Canon TV lenses is a great example of how the market is changing and the way in which Canon is able to support our customers. Of course, some productions may choose to move directly to 4K acquisition and we offer outstanding camera and lens solutions in that area, too.

DB: What do you view as the main challenges affecting your industry in the Middle East and how are you addressing them? The fragmented nature of the local Middle Eastern market, with different countries adopting new technology at differing rates, is something that all manufacturers have to cope with. At Canon we have some work to do to replicate the same success in market share that we have been able to achieve in Europe in recent years, and we're working hard to do that. Overall we're very positive about the opportunities available in Middle East.

DB: What products is your company focusing on at IBC? At IBC this year visitors will be able to get hands-on with Canon's entire line-up of broadcast solutions and technologies, including the recently announced CN7x17 KA S – our first-ever cinema lens to feature a servo drive unit. We'll also be showing off our X-series camcorders, pioneering Cinema EOS range and extensive portfolio of over 100 lenses. Delegates can expect to see a range of exciting live demonstrations on our stand including 4K output from studio camera configurations and live colour grading enabled by our 4K reference monitors.

DB: How important is IBC to your company's strategy for the coming year? IBC provides the perfect platform for the creative industries to come together and discuss the processes and standards that will drive the future of television. The opportunities available today are ushering in a new era of broadcast and the conversations that take place at IBC will help to shape the direction of the industry in these exciting and innovative times.
