4x4 Magazine: 4x4 of the year: winners announced
(M2 PressWIRE Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)
RDATE:28092007
Winners of the most eagerly awaited awards in the 4x4 calendar - 4x4 of
the Year - are announced today by 4x4 Magazine, Britain's biggest and
best-selling all-makes off-road magazine.
The awards include 8 class award winners and an overall winner chosen
from a truly eclectic line-up of nearly 60 models representing the
multi-faceted 4x4 range available in the UK and judged by 4x4
Magazine's own experts.
The winner of the overall award for 4x4 of the Year is Land Rover
Defender 90.
From a truly eclectic line-up of nearly 60 models, representing the
multi-faceted 4x4 range available in the UK, the judges were faced with
tough choices as a number of new contenders sought to challenge the
established benchmarks.
Editor of 4x4 Magazine John Carroll says: "There is no better example
of this than the overall champion and Extreme class winner, Land
Rover's Defender 90 which, thanks to its all-new Ford-derived
powertrain, plus revamped interior, has clearly elevated the
traditional British off-road icon to another level."
Land Rover picked up two more prized class wins, with its equally
iconic Range Rover remaining the aspirational Luxury benchmark, while
the Discovery 3 proved the Family choice in a rapidly expanding
category.
Nissan's second-generation X-Trail promises to take the high-selling
Soft-Roader market by storm, so much so it convinced the 4x4 judges
enough to take this year's class crown, while in the pocket-friendly
Budget sector, once again the effervescent Daihatsu Terios combined
many appealing traits to outpoint its rivals.
Value is also important in the estate car-led Crossover sector, and
this played a key element in Skoda's recently revamped Octavia Scout
claiming this year's title, while perhaps no other 4x4 sector is
booming quite like Lifestyle Pick-ups and, as last year, Nissan's
Navara carried off the spoils against ever-stronger opposition.
An all-new Special Award recognises the contribution one particular
model has made to the 4x4 genre, and this year the Spirit of 4x4' goes
to the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, a modern-day vehicle that truly
represents off-roading heritage.
4x4 Magazine's all-inclusive evaluation of the current market is
further enhanced by the addition of Highly Commended awards, which mark
out those vehicles that came within a vote or two of being their
category winners, proving that the UK market has never been so
competitive.
4x4 Magazine has been published continuously since 1982. 4x4 of the
Year has been hosted annually by the magazine since 1988.
The full 4x4 of the Year 2008 review is in the October 2007 issue of
4x4 Magazine, on sale today.
