46th Total Tara Rally Launched in Windhoek

(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) This year's edition will take place from 27 to 29 November in Rehoboth, Hardap Region.

During the launch, Total - the French fuel giant - handed over sponsorship of N$500 000 to the organisers.

Harald Lingner, the chairperson of the organising committee, said during the ceremony they hope the rally will bring memories to sponsors, competitors and spectators alike.

"With our decision to take the rally to Rehoboth, we aim to promote Namibian rallying in a different region of Namibia not very much involved in rallies as yet," he said.

Total Namibia's Sales and Marketing Manager, Morne Gerber said they are proud to be associated with this prestigious event.

The 2014 Total Tara will consist of 25 stages, covering about 650 kilometres, of which around 250km is special stages.

Entries for the race open on Monday.

It is expected that Japie van Niekerk and navigator Gerhard Snyman from South Africa will defend their title.

Chris Liebenberg and Andre de Jager won the very first Total Tara Rally in 1969 with their Renault R8 Gordini.
