3 arrested in connection with track robbery: Police: Public reaction to video of crime helped find suspects

COLLINSVILLE, Nov 30, 2008 (Belleville News-Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --

With the help of people who watched a surveillance videotape of a Fairmount Park racetrack robbery, police officers were able to arrest three suspects accused of taking an amount of money described as in the "six figures."

The exact amount of money stolen Nov. 12 was not released.
The names of the three suspects have not been released because they have not been charged yet.
Lt. Tom Coppotelli said the city will present its case to Madison County prosecutors on Monday.
Coppotelli said the department worked all day Thanksgiving on information received from people who had seen the robbery surveillance video that was released to the public Wednesday.

Officers obtained warrants on Friday and arrested two of the people outside Collinsville and one inside the city limits.

"We recovered a chunk of the money and some other assets from the robbery," he said. "The arrests came from people watching the video, realizing who it was and calling us."

He said police will release more information Monday after the men have been charged.

The robbery at the racetrack occurred about 11:30 p.m. when an employee of the track was forced at gunpoint to open a safe so thieves could take the money.
