$290,000 bank fraud: Hartselle woman pleads guilty to credit-card scam at First American; was employee

(The Decatur Daily (AL) (KRT) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Sep. 19--A Hartselle woman pleaded guilty to bank fraud for her involvement in stealing more than $290,000 from her employer through a credit card scheme, said U.S. Attorney Alice Martin.

Leigh Ann Smith, 41, faces a maximum of 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine.

Martin said Smith opened a Visa Gold credit card in her husband's name and Social Security number, and "knowingly executed a scheme to defraud First American Bank."

The Decatur bank hired Smith as a card services manager, and from June 2005 to November 2007, Smith conducted a series of unauthorized credit card increases that brought her card's credit limit up to $350,000, Martin said.

"Ms. Smith betrayed the trust of her employer and abused her position to steal from a federally insured institution," said Carmen S. Adams, FBI special agent in charge.

After opening the credit card account, Smith made a cash advance from the card to Compass Bank, where she previously worked as a risk analyst.

"Smith altered the report that was reviewed by credit card department personnel to visually remove maintenance conducted on the credit card account," Martin said.

"She also turned off credit card bureau reporting, finance charges and interest on the credit card."

Martin said First American Bank's senior vice president of operations questioned Smith about the credit card, and Feb. 13, Smith left the bank and withdrew $980 from a Hartselle ATM.

"Smith attempted another cash withdrawal on Feb. 14, and later that day she submitted her resignation via e-mail," she said.

Martin said as of Smith's last day, the credit card balance was in excess of $290,000.

She said Assistant U.S. Attorney Angela R. Debro is prosecuting Smith.
