2015 Biocompare Antibody Market Report: Comprehending User Selections, Validation and Purchasing Trends

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Sept. 1, 2015 Biocompare, the leading digital marketplace for the life sciences industry, today released its biennial antibody market report.  The goal of the report is to summarize and communicate to manufacturers, vendors, and the life sciences community, the trends and needs that drive researchers to selecting particular antibodies that enable them to do better research.

The research antibody market is an estimated to be approximately a $2.5 billion in 2015 with a 3% per annum expected growth. This report covers the impact of brand awareness, loyalty and consideration when evaluating, selecting and purchasing antibodies. This survey found that more than one-third of antibody users are currently spending between $500-1000 per month on antibodies and this purchasing habit is predicted to increase by 5.5% in 2016.

More than 950 participants representing both academic and industrial research sectors responded to questions dealing with key factors that drive antibody selection, validation, reproducibility criteria and purchasing habits. Given the recent issues on antibody quality raised by the scientific community, this survey askd respondents to rate the key factors that influence a purchasing decision (assuming the quality of an antibody is the same among vendors);  citations, images, brand awareness and technical information of the product all ranked higher than price in importance to the process.  This was in contrast to the Biocompare 2013 antibody survey results in which price was the top selection.  This suggests for researchers today, technical content is driving product consideration.

Western analysis continues to be the leading antibody application used by almost 70% of the respondents. Results from the survey showed that almost 30% of researchers plan to perform either flow cytometry or fluorescence microscopy experiments within the next year suggesting these could be growing antibody-based applications for researchers.
