2 women found dead as police rescue 7 climbers in Niigata+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)NIIGATA, Japan, March 21_(Kyodo) _ Two women were confirmed dead at a hospital Tuesday after they and seven other climbers got lost on a mountain in Niigata Prefecture, police said.

Miyoko Abe, 62, and Tamie Yasumuro, 54, were found frozen to death, while police helicopters safely rescued the five men and two women from 2,026-meter Mt. Sennokura in the Tanigawa range. The group, aged between 54 and 63, is from Kanagawa Prefecture.



A Niigata police helicopter found some of the climbers Monday, but strong winds hampered rescue operations, the police said.

Police restarted searching for another climber, Shunji Takakusa, 54, from Tokyo, who went missing Saturday on 1,983-meter Mt. Tairappyo of the same range.



Also Tuesday, helicopters from the Gunma prefectural police rescued three men after bad weather prevented them from going down the 1,974-meter Ichinokura valley in the range Monday.

Police resumed the search in the morning after suspending it Monday at sunset. The three, all from Tokyo, asked to be rescued via mobile phones.

Of the three, a 48-year-old man was hospitalized for frostbite and two others, aged 61 and 34, suffered dehydration, the police said, adding that the three remain conscious.
