2 Chilean cops fired for joking with fake bomb at police station

Santiago de Chile, Nov 7, 2009 (EFE via COMTEX) -- Two Chilean police officers who made a fake bomb as a joke, planted it at the station and then phoned in a warning about the presence of the device, were dismissed Saturday and may face criminal charges, the force said.

The jokers were identified as 2nd Cpl. Roberto Villarroel Morales with 13 years' service and Jorge Lincaqueo Huanchacura with three, both members of the Chilean militarized police known as the Carabineros.

The two from the Rinconada de Maipu police station on the southwest side of Santiago took a box, stuck cables and a battery on it and left it Friday night in the police station parking lot, Marcelo Caceres, commander of the Carabineros Western Division, said.

They immediately phoned to tip off police about the presence of the bomb, which sparked an operation by the Special Operations Group, or Gope, that eventually found that the device was a fake.

One of those implicated then called the captain at the police station to tell him it was a joke, but the officer reacted with no sense of humor at all.

This was a "serious mistake" for which both Carabineros "were dismissed before dawn today," Caceres told reporters.

"This is a joke that obviously cannot be accepted for any reason by the force," he said.

He added that besides being dismissed, they were turned over to the military prosecutor's office and risk criminal charges that he did not specify.

This week two attempts were made in Santiago to bomb bank agencies, one of which caused slight injuries to a guard at one of the branch offices.

From the year 2004 until now in Chile there have been 102 bomb attacks, mostly using homemade, low-powered bombs that have been attributed at times to anarchist groups and organizations that claim to support the Mapuche cause.
