1st LD: Iraqi PM's bloc leads in Basra: electoral commission
BAGHDAD, Mar 14, 2010 (Xinhua via COMTEX) --
A bloc led by incumbent Prime
Minister Nuri al-Maliki was leading the parliamentary election in
the southern port of Basra, according to partial results from the
electoral commission on Sunday.
Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) said Maliki'
s State of Law bloc won 219,657 votes while the Iraqi National
Alliance, led by Shiite religious parties, garnered 121,497.
The secular list of Iraqia, headed by former Prime Minister
Ayad Allawi came third with 36,093 votes, the IHEC said, citing
the results of 63 percent of the votes in Basra.
On March 7, some 62.4 percent of more than 18 million eligible
voters turned out in some 8,920 polling centers across the country
to vote for the 325-seat Iraqi Council of Representatives out of
some 6,300 candidates.
