1st LD: Iraqi PM's bloc leads in Basra: electoral commission

BAGHDAD, Mar 14, 2010 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- A bloc led by incumbent Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki was leading the parliamentary election in the southern port of Basra, according to partial results from the electoral commission on Sunday.

Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) said Maliki' s State of Law bloc won 219,657 votes while the Iraqi National Alliance, led by Shiite religious parties, garnered 121,497.

The secular list of Iraqia, headed by former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi came third with 36,093 votes, the IHEC said, citing the results of 63 percent of the votes in Basra.

On March 7, some 62.4 percent of more than 18 million eligible voters turned out in some 8,920 polling centers across the country to vote for the 325-seat Iraqi Council of Representatives out of some 6,300 candidates.
