1931 Hawke's Bay commemorations underway; bells from HMS Veronica ring at same time as earthquake 75 years ago

(IRN News Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Commemorations of the 1931 Napier earthquake are being held in Hawke's Bay today.

Bells from HMS Veronica were rung at exactly the same time as the earthquake hit 75 years ago.

The ship was moored in the bay when the earthquake hit.

Our reporter Tim Fookes is in Napier at the commemoration service and he says it is a particularly emotional time for the few remaining survivors. He says they are remembering at that this time 75 years ago, their city was left in ruins.

Both the Prime Minister Helen Clark and the Mayor have both given moving speeches about the quake.
