12 arrested in Occupy Atlanta AT&T protest

(UPI Top Stories Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) A dozen protesters affiliated with Occupy Atlanta were arrested in the AT&T Midtown Center after demonstrating against layoffs at the phone giant, police say.

After a recent announcement that the telecom company was to layoff some 550 employees, Occupy protesters, as well as members of Communications Workers of America, converged on the lobby of the center Monday.

The 12 protesters arrested were charged with criminal trespass and are being held in Fulton County Jail.

Occupy Atlanta spokesman Tim Franzen told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution protesters would continue to maintain a presence until AT&T changes its plan for mass layoffs.

AT&T issued a statement saying as many employees as possible are being relocated within the company, and that the layoffs are necessary as the company continues to lose home wireless customers.
