10 missing as boat hull cracks in NW Philippines
MANILA, Mar 13, 2010 (Xinhua via COMTEX) --
A boat carrying 10 passengers was
reported missing Saturday after it suffered a broken hull off
Fortune Island in northwest Philippines, a Philippine Coast Guard
official said.
"One of the passengers communicated with us through a cell
phone," local media quoted Troy Cornelio, Philippine Coast Guard
Batangas station commander, as saying.
Upon receiving the report, the Coast Guard immediately sent
troops and issued distress notice to nearby vessels.
Cornelio said the passenger told him that they were off Fortune
Island in Nasugbu but when Coast Guard rescuers arrived, the boat
was nowhere in sight.
Cornelio said Coast Guard members were still searching for the
victims who were reportedly near Corregidor Island at the entrance
of Manila Bay late Saturday afternoon.
