Formspring Launches Its First Android App as Company Addresses Drop in Visitors

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

Formspring was planning to launch its first app running on an Android (News - Alert) operating system on Tuesday, according to news reports. In keeping with the mission of the service, the new app will let users ask questions to other users or answer questions from other users. The new app comes just a few months after Formspring launched an iPhone (News - Alert) app in September.

On Tuesday, Formspring also launched a new homepage. The new homepage will let users find friends who have similar interests, and users will also have more interaction with brands and well-known celebrities via the new homepage, according to Gigaom.

“With the new homepage you’ll also be able to see the various Interest channels we created to give members a new way to meet and interact with each other through shared interests,” Formspring CEO Ade Olonoh was quoted by Mashable. “The new redesign also spotlights celebrities taking time to respond to their fans’ most pressing questions and thousands of people building conversation around the Formspring question of the day.”

Formspring has some 28 million members. On average, Formspring users spend 1.5 hours per session using the iPhone app, Mashable said.

Recently, Formspring has seen a decrease in monthly unique visitors, Gigaom reported. There are now 25 million monthly unique users, as opposed to the 30 million monthly unique users in November.

In response, the company will focus more on mobile development and the new web design should help, too, Gigaom adds. In addition, a “revamped mobile website” should be offered within a few months, according to Gigaom.

Formspring continues to generate interest. In December, Formspring had 500,000 users sign up.

Formspring members can use the service to find friends, celebrities, musicians or athletes, according to a report carried last year on TMCnet. It also connects with Facebook (News - Alert), Twitter, MySpace and e-mail platforms, TMCnet added.
