Muskogee, Oklahoma to Clear Space for VA Call Center Parking Facility
The city of Muskogee, Oklahoma houses a Veteran's Administration (VA) call center, but its employees have found parking near their workplace challenging in recent years, so the city has announced it plans to construct a facility to handle overflow parking a few blocks east of downtown.
The new parking facility will require the approval of the City Council before it can proceed, as well as a meeting of Public Works Committee members. If the project is given a go-ahead, it will be presented to the City Council on January 23. The new parking facility would require the demolition of several buildings on a block bounded by North F and G streets, East Broadway and Callahan Street, reports the local Muskogee Phoenix.
Several people who own property in the area under consideration for the parking facility have already sold their properties to the city. The city will reportedly need to acquire five additional land parcels, which it will do by agreement or condemnation.
Muskogee Mayor John Tyler Hammons said the parking project will benefit the city in two ways: it will help improve safety by ridding the city of a troublesome area, and will promote economic development.
“Anybody who drives through that area during business hours knows that parking is horrible – people are parking in the streets and yards,” said the mayor. “By doing this, we not only alleviate the street parking but we take a necessary step toward economic development – but any future expansion at the VA is contingent upon having adequate parking.”
