Major League Gaming Pulls Its Sites From GoDaddy Over Support of SOPA

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

While there are heated battles going on in Congress over almost everything, one thing the folks in Washington have managed to do is unite online companies against the Stop Online Piracy Act. SOPA has managed to bring almost every company on the Internet into an alliance against it, thanks in large part to the overreaching powers it would give to those who don’t deserve to wield it.

The outrage over SOPA is so strong that a few companies have managed to put together a bit of a resistance group and their first move was to announce that companies supporting the bill would not be invited to the prestigious YC Demo Day.

Not every online company was originally against SOPA. GoDaddy is one of the more prominent domain hosting sites on the Internet and for reasons that were passing understanding for many, decided to support SOPA.

This lead to several other of the web’s top dogs to start talking about organizing a boycott of GoDaddy and any other online organization that supported the Anti-Piracy legislation. The threatened boycott was enough to get GoDaddy to reverse its position. It now appears that the original support for SOPA was enough that one company has decided to pull its business.

While lots of companies have stepped away from GoDaddy since the SOPA flap, one major company appears ready to leave the domain host in the dust for good. The Major League Gaming organization has now announced that they have pulled all of their sites of off GoDaddy’s servers and have moved their business over to the company’s chief rival in NameCheap.

In a statement the organization issued yesterday, the MLG announced that it would be pulling more than 100 sites away from GoDaddy. Major League Gaming made no bones about why they were pulling their business saying “MLG is firmly against both the specifics of SOPA and the philosophy behind the bill. We urge all of you to read up on the issue and draw your own conclusions.”

While GoDaddy originally felt like they were taking the principled approach by supporting SOPA, it now appears the company made a tactical error.
