Pinterest Named One of Top Social Sites

By Monica Gleberman, Contributing Writer

Pinterest, a start-up based in Palo Alto (News - Alert), California has emerged as one of the top 10 sites pinpointing social trends in 2011. Pinterest is an invite only website that describes itself as a pin board to organize and share things you love. Pinterest, which debuted in March, has seen some seriously increased traffic over the past few months.

Pinterest has received nearly 11 million total visits during the week ending December 1 – almost 40 times the number of total visits less than seven months ago. Last month, the company saw over 30 million visitors just within a 30 day period.

Rachel King, writer for ZDNET, said the website is extremely user friendly. “The platform is incredibly simple to use – almost to the point where it is refreshing to see a new social networking site that fulfills a purpose we might not have realized we wanted. Users can create ‘boards’ to which they ‘pin’ images with very short descriptions,” said King.

King said it’s essentially visual bookmarks but designed in an organized way, which can then be shared with friends and family. “It gets even more social as you can elect to allow friends to pin photos and info to your boards and vice versa,” said King.

Currently, the site is most popular with females and arts and crafts enthusiast between the ages of 25 and 44. Heather Dougherty, research director at Hitwise, said people specifically in the Northwest and Southeast of the country are using the site. “This indicates that Pinterest visitors have a different profile versus their counterparts visiting other social networking sites such as Facebook and YouTube (News - Alert),” said Hitwise.

When comparing Pinterest with other hobby and crafting websites, the data shows that Boomers and Boomerangs are the group most likely to visit Pinterest. This group of consumers is characterized as baby boomers and young adults who are heavy web users and spend a lot of time on house and garden, sports and fitness, and family-oriented websites.
