Colorado Party Advertised on Facebook Draws Over 2,000 Revelers

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

As if we needed even more indications that sports and social media don’t mix. Of course, some would add that the latest goings on in Colorado show that teens and social media don’t mix either. Still others would probably say that what happened was exactly what was supposed to happen. Those people would say that social media, sports and teens all mixed in a very predictable way. Mixing doesn’t mean there doesn’t need to be some control over the outcomes.

No one can claim that social media doesn’t play a huge role in our day to day lives anymore. It seems that almost everyone is on some sort of social media site. At times, sports teams even try and use social media sites like Twitter to their advantage. Others would say that attempting to use sites like this to your advantage is an awful lot like letting an angry bull loose in a china shop. An apartment complex that is located very close to the Colorado State University campus wanted to throw one heck of a bash. Those organizing the party decided to promote the shindig on Facebook (News - Alert) as being “the biggest pool party of the year,” and certainly got what they were looking for.

According to Fort Collins police, as many as 2,000 people showed up to the party and four partiers (including two CSU football players) were arrested. According to authorities at least another 10 people were admitted to the local hospitals with varying symptoms all having to do with over consumption of alcohol. Fort Collins police are claiming that people as far away as Denver (65 miles away) showed up to the party. When authorities went to clear out the festivities they had to block off several surrounding streets.

The Colorado State Rams players that were arrested were James Skelton, a linebacker and Zachary Tiedgen who is a defensive end. Both players are 21, but Skelton was arrested for charges stemming from a fight and Tiedgen for disorderly conduct. The athletic department had no official comment other than to point out that the University discourages players from posting on social sites in order to avoid embarrassment.
