General Telecom's RouteNGN Interoperable with Metaswitch's MetaSphere Application

By Carrie Schmelkin, TMCnet Web Editor

Those looking for the most robust, feature-rich routing tool in the telecom market and the industry’s broadest suite of telephony applications got some good news today as General Telecom announced interoperability with Metaswitch Networks’ MetaSphere Application Feature Server.

General Telecom’s RouteNGN, a routing tool designed by carrier executives who understand customers’ needs, serves as a route engine for VoIP/ TDM traffic over next-generation networks. The engine was designed to help carriers and service providers bring VoIP offerings quickly to market, while minimizing CAPEX and OPEX (News - Alert).

Metaswitch’s MetaSphere stands strong in the market as well, being touted by Frost & Sullivan as a “portfolio of advanced services that... are engineered to meet current and future market trends, ultimately providing a roadmap for future innovation.”

When TMC’s CEO Rich Tehrani (News - Alert) had the chance to sit down with Metaswitch at CTIA 2011 in Orlando, Fla., earlier this year, Vice President of Marketing for Metaswitch Stephen Gleave told Tehrani that Metaswitch has been making its dent in the market for almost a decade.

“People say is Metaswitch new to the space and the answer is we are not new to the challenge of mobile operators, operators having to compete, and operators having to defend their turf because that’s something we have been doing for 10 years – helping incumbent operators in the U.S. to basically revolutionize, transform their networks,” Gleave said in a video interview.

“What we are doing in wireless is bringing our experience… and actually taking some of the applications that have historically been tied to wireline devices and matching them up with mobile devices,” he added.

MetaSwitch (News - Alert) Networks’ customers include cable companies, MSO’s, hosted PBX Providers, CLECs and traditional carriers – all of whom will be able to benefit from the General Telecom’s RouteNGN being interoperable with MetaSphere, according to company officials. Customers will now be able to enjoy the most “powerful, cost-effective and easy-to-use, high-capacity routing solution in the market today,” they added.

General Telecom’s RouteNGN boasts a variety of features such as: support for 100 million rates and 250 cps per server; profit-based routing ; LNP dipping and LRN routing; jurisdictional routing; loop detection; on-the-fly drag-and-drop routing; time-of-day routing; ANI/DN blocking; and load balancing for an "always on" connection.

Recently, General Telecom amped up its RouteNGN engine, packing it with new and expanded least cost routing (LCR) capabilities. Some of the features of the General Telecom RouteNGN high-capacity, least cost routing tool include: open development in which the carrier can create custom tools to integrate with RouteNGN via its API; NGN capacity which allows RouteNGN to scale to 1000 cps or more; and the ability to migrate TDM to VoIP across existing network devices as lower OPEX.

“Incorporating the General Telecom RouteNGN least cost routing technology has been instrumental in helping us lower the cost of IP and TDM voice termination services to our customers, through better routing accuracy and efficiency,” said Zachary Horn, president, Metro Communications, at the time of the announcment.  “All of our services are custom tailored to meet the unique needs of each customer; the RouteNGN technology helps us change routing decisions quickly which translates to greater profitability and better customer service.”
