Nissan Leaf App for Mobile Vehicle Management Available for Android

By Tracey E. Schelmetic, TMCnet Contributor

If you're a proud owner of Nissan's new electric car, the Leaf, you probably already know that you can access the vital signs of your car – the state of the battery's charge, for example, and the corresponding estimated range – through Nissan's Web site. If you're an iPhone owner, you probably also knew that you could access the same information using your phone.

Now, if you're the owner of an Android (News - Alert)-based smartphone or tablet, you can get the information even faster and with more portability via a newly released Nissan Leaf app for Android OS devices, writes AllCarsElectric.com.

The app will no doubt appease Nissan Leaf drivers who found accessing their car's information through Nissan's dedicated Web site awkward and counter-intuitive.

The free Android application offers the same functionality as its iPhone (News - Alert) sibling, writes AllCarsElectric's Nikki Gordon-Bloomfield, but with a slightly redesigned interface, with tabs at the top rather than the bottom of the screen.

Users of the new Leaf app are generally reporting success with it (the Web site AndroidPolice reports that the app is more popular than the car itself, joking that it should be happily received by all two dozen Nissan Leaf owners) but some users have complained that the app is buggy or non-functional with the Android Honeycomb 3.0 OS for tablet computers, or devices that are running Android versions earlier than Donut 1.6.

The app draws its data from Nissan's Carwings mobile vehicle management platform which allows users to manage their vehicles remotely and control some functions directly from remote locations. In addition to checking the state of the battery, Nissan Leaf drivers can also turn on the climate control functions remotely to pre-heat or pre-cool the car.
