A search engine's main function is to point a user to a certain website based on their input terms. The web sites to which they would be led rely on the optimization of the search engine, or SEO, which indicates the best results. SEO is crucial because it is the key factor when deciding exactly which websites are going to be most viewed. Often users look for the keywords of pages on their preferred search engines that most match up to what they looked for, and the search engine must display the sites that are the best fits for those particular searches.

For instance, a user searching for chicken filet recipes would be most likely to click a page that is titled “chicken filet recipes” rather than just “recipes.” Search engines comb the entire internet for results that would most match up to what a user would search for, and rank them depending on what might be most relevant.

Search engines aren't limited to being sites that scour the entire internet, they can be applied to individual websites and businesses that will conduct searches within specific areas. You might see these in e-commerce sites like Amazon or Newegg that will narrow down searches to the specific products that their companies carry. These kinds of search engines are indispensable for sites that want users to find the goods that they’re offering.

How Search Engines Work

Search engines typically all follow the same route in order to deliver the best result to a user. First off, the search engine will screen the network for new pages, and try to match up results with what most resembles the keywords searched for. This is a phase known as crawling. Once these pages are discovered, the next step is indexing, where these pages are analyzed based on their content in order for the search engine to pull from whenever that content shows up in a search. Lastly, the content is delivered to the user via serving, where the keywords typed in by the user are compared to the ones in the database of indexed pages, and the ones that most closely match are the pages that users will see when they search. Search engine software created by businesses is most successful when they take these factors into account in order to satisfy the consumer by providing them with the most accurate results.

Search engines are irreplaceable in modern everyday use because of the way they connect users with products, services, and solutions that they would never have discovered otherwise. When businesses take advantage of search engine solutions and SEO, they can ensure that their products are the ones that consumers will connect with first and foremost.
