Assessing How Much Automation Your Business Needs



Before you invest in automation, you must first asses your business needs now and in the future. How will your robot impact on your long-term goals? What do you hope to achieve in the short-term?

You need to have a clear picture of where you see your business in the long-term. Then, you will be able to break down your immediate goals in order to get there. You will need to understand how automation fits into these goals with regard to how much robotic expertise you need.



In addition, you must figure out what you plan to achieve by introducing robotics expertise in the workplace. You may be looking for robotic machine tending to boost production and your need experts to operate the machines.

Find Out How Much Expertise You Have on Your Team-if Any

Before you print out and post positions, find out if there is anyone on your team that has the relevant robotic skills. Whether they have certification is not important, but they should be able to demonstrate that they can operate a robot.

Next, you must figure out if the skills demonstrated are relevant for the automation you have in mind. It costs money to add to your staff. It would be more economical to assign a worker to operate the robot than to recruit a new worker.

What Are Your Available Resources?

This is the next item on your plan. Technology-related resources are the most important here with regard to automation. However, you also need to factor in others such as:

  • Budget
  • Time
  • Human resources
  • Social resources

The resources you have will inform how much you will be able to achieve in your automation plans.

 Avoid Outsourcing        

If you do not have the expertise you need in-house, then you have two options open to you:

  • Outsource the expertise
  •  Train a few of your workers

If you want your project to remain in-house, then the second option is your best bet. Find out how much training a few members of your team will cost you in terms of time and funds. This, however, may not be in order to find out which will cost you less.

Naturally, you have compelling reasons to opt for in-house expertise even if you will have to pay for training. Some of those reasons may include giving your employees the chance to upgrade their skills. Also, you may want to keep your business operations in-house.

How Much Training is Required?

Extensive research has already made it clear that robots can take your business to the next level. Also, it may be that you have achieved some of your goals and automation is simply the next item on your list.

Whatever, your reason, incorporating robotics in your business is easier than ever especially since cobots came onto the scene. However, how much training does your team require? That is the big question.

Robotic technology is dynamic which means new technology is being introduced every so often. To figure out how much training your workforce needs, you must first determine the automation needs of your company. This may call for business analysis.

There are many factors that come into play when you consider having your automation expertise in-house. The training will be informed by factors such as:

  • Your business goals
  • Your plans for expansion
  • Internal and external resources available to you

In other words, the success of your business may be pegged on how you integrate robotics expertise in your enterprise. It is not limited to technology.

You must consider a number of factors as you determine the amount of robotic expertise your business requires. Reflect on why it is important to integrate robotics in your business at this particular time. Also, determine how many on your team have any skills and which one. Then you will be able to make informed decisions with regard to the expertise you need versus what you have.
