Better Biometrics Mean Safer Mobile Devices

By Stefania Viscusi, Assignment Desk Editor

Keeping our mobile devices and data private is part of the constant struggle in an increasingly online, app-filled world. Having to remember and constantly change passwords, fearing hackers, and pure frustration with security measures of today have lead many of us to even keep some important things unsecured.

Now, a new Android (News - Alert) App is being offered that one company says is the right way to finally have secure, locked devices that are easy to use.

Sensory Inc., a company that works to create safer UX through vision and voice technologies, has introduced AppLock – which it says is easy to use and very safe.

Available via the Google (News - Alert) Play Store, the new security measure incorporates biometrics into locking our devices – but unlike the use of fingerprint recognition sensors like the past, it uses voice and vision authentication to unlock devices.

Using a technology called TrulySecure – the company said it can lock mobile phones, tablets and even PCs and needs only a microphone or camera and a processor to work.

To set up the security, the app pops open a window that looks for a user's face and/or listens for the passphrases to authenticate the user.

This can work in scenarios where devices are stolen or lost, as unidentified users will be unable to unlock the device and gain access to personal information.

"Consumers generally find it cumbersome to use PINs or passwords to lock their phones, and as a result these devices often go unlocked," said Todd Mozer, CEO of Sensory. "Sensory's biometric authentication provides a high level of security, while still being convenient enough that people will actually use it."

The TrulySecure SDK and technology is also available for application and hardware developers to use with Android, iOS, Windows, Mac and Linux platforms.
