Gift Idea: GEEKFUEL Delivers with Monthly Packages of the Precious

By Paula Bernier, Executive Editor, TMC

I’m a tech writer married to a math teacher, and the two of us are raising a 14-year-old ukulele-playing, Nova-watching, bookworm. So when GEEKFUEL asked if I would be interested in receiving one of its mystery boxes, I jumped at the opportunity.

I hadn’t heard about GEEKFUEL, so I didn’t really know whether to expect stuff like computer components and smartphone rechargers, or a box of goods that would be more accessible to even non-techie types. I was happy to find it was the latter.

The idea here is pure and simple fun. Most people like surprises, and that’s what GEEKFUEL delivers.

It’s akin to other subscription services such as a Birchbox, which provide subscribers boxes of fun beauty products once, every month, or a few times a year. You might even consider it kind of like a beer- or sock-of-the-month club, although you can buy a subscription to or just a single box from GEEKFUEL. The idea is that all of the above surprise the recipient with a collection of fun stuff, but in the case of GEEKFUEL that stuff is targeted at the geeky set.

Our box contained a GEEKFUEL T-shirt (size XL for the hubby) and branded sticker, a beautiful comic book featuring Valiant’s Armor Hunters, a deck of playing cards with characters from the movie The Princess Bride on the face cards, a small envelope of HALO Alpha series Mega Bloks, a weird cartoon poster featuring Lord of the Rings characters, and, of course, a Yoda Pez dispenser and candies.

“This is a good idea,” my daughter commented as she rifled through the goods after running to hang up the poster in her bedroom.

Indeed. And given that The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies movie arrived in theaters today, Disney’s (News - Alert) Lucasfilm just started to promote the upcoming Star Wars movie, and Cary Elwes (who played the male lead in The Princess Bride) is currently on tour promoting his book “As You Wish”, it seems the timing for this package of GEEKFUEL goods couldn’t be better.

If you’re interested in obtaining a GEEKFUEL box – or a collection of them – for yourself or for a colleague, friend, or loved one, go to www.geekfuel.com. Pricing starts at $13.90 plus shipping and handling.
