SanDisk Targets CIOs and the Enterprise with SSD Solutions and STAR Program for Migration

By Laura Stotler, TMCnet Contributing Editor

SanDisk (News - Alert), a company that specializes in both consumer and enterprise SSD solutions, has a vision of how Flash will ultimately transform the data center. The company, which has a broad portfolio ranging from Flash storage devices to software to vertically integrated solutions, recently attended the INTEROP New York 2014 event.

TMC CEO Rich Tehrani (News - Alert) had an opportunity to speak to outbound marketing executives from both the consumer and enterprise sides of SanDisk’s business about their vision of SSD in the current technology landscape. According to Manuel Martull, director of outbound marketing for the enterprise at SanDisk, SSD enables database acceleration that will have a major impact on data centers in the future.

“We’re extremely excited about the potential,” said Martull. “If you look at how the consumer world has transitioned to Flash at all the levels – MP3 players, smartphones, tablets, laptops – we think the enterprise will be the next wave. And really Flash is going to take the enterprise to new levels that we haven’t seen before around big data analytics, around virtualization, VDI, databases. It’s going to be a brand new experience for data centers with Flash memory from SanDisk.”

The company showcased its Optimus Max, a four TB SSD, at the INTEROP event as well as its SATA and ULLtraDIMM lines of SSDs. On the corporate side, the company promoted their X300 SSD, which features the company’s nCache 2.0 tiered caching technology to improve responsiveness for any type of workload.

SanDisk also debuted its SanDisk Tech Assist Refresh (STAR (News - Alert)) program at the INTEROP event, designed to provide a migration path for CIOs who are looking to update their corporate fleet of laptops from slow and outdated hard drives to SSDs. The company handles all aspects of the upgrade, including endpoint inventory analysis, employee service scheduling, migration of data, reporting and analysis and support after the upgrade is completed.

“It really enables for us, the ability to go into any organization and help them migrate to SSD and replace their hard drives,” said Cliff Sun, director of outbound marketing at SanDisk, of the STAR Program. He said one of the biggest barriers to SSD adoption SanDisk has observed has been the hassle associated with migrating in a seamless manner. The STAR Program handles all the heavy lifting associated with that.

“From a corporate standpoint, you lower your total cost of ownership and increase the lifespan of the actual laptop,” said Sun, adding that a migration offers obvious performance enhancements as well.
