Wheelings & Dealings: M&A Week in Review

By Joe Rizzo, TMCnet Contributing Writer

By the looks of things, it seems that Google (News - Alert) has been quite busy this week. In a quest to bolster analytics offerings, Google acquired Adometry, a company that utilizes advanced advertising attribution technology. In a posting, Google wrote that Adometry “will build on the momentum of our existing measurement and analytics offerings, which include Google Analytics Premium as well as other products.”

Google also continues its cloud build out with the acquisition of Stackdriver. This company is a cloud computing systems management firm based in Boston, MA. Their goal to help development and operations manage large, distributed applications running in the public cloud. This announcement was also released through a blog posting.

So, what else has Google been up to? It looks like it might be trying to take some of Yelp’s (News - Alert) popularity. You might be asking, “How can Google do that?” The answer would be through the acquisition of Appetas. This is a company that offers restaurants a way to build websites. The odd thing, however, is the fact that Google closed down the company and issuing staff an edict to work on "new endeavors."

Let’s move on from Google. LogMeIn which is best known for its cloud-based Software as a Service (SaaS (News - Alert)) services such as remote connectivity, acquired Ionia Corporation. This company has worked with numerous businesses across many industries, leveraging the Internet of Things (IoT) in order to connect, optimize and transform their products and services. So as you can see, this is LogMeIn’s (News - Alert) way of attempting to get on the fast track to IoT.

Should not an app’s descriptive name actually describe the app? Well until recently, that could not be said about Snapchat. I, for one, would assume that the name refers to an app that involves pictures and chatting. Through a new acquisition this week of a WebRTC company named AddLive, the chat is now in the Snap. Of course, there are also a few other new features that have been added to the app.

In a quest to extend its lead in the cloud contact center market, inContact, Inc. acquired Uptivity this week. Uptivity is a leading provider of contact center workforce optimization and management solutions. Both of these companies appear to have been on parallel steep upswings in the call-center software industry before merging. The hope is that the growth will accelerate when their products combine.

You may have noticed that a lot of these stories have something to do with cloud services. That brings us to the merger between two companies with the result being that the groups have formed a new cloud security solutions brand called iSheriff.

Every day a lot of companies make deals, raise funds and form partnerships. We try to keep an eye on these Wheelings & Dealings. Whether it is an acquisition or a joint partnership that benefits several companies, we will keep you apprised of all of the important details.
