Wheelings & Dealings: M&A Week in Review

By Joe Rizzo, TMCnet Contributing Writer

This week’s news from Hangzhou, China is the announcement that leading mobile app store, Sky-mobi Ltd., through its controlling subsidiary Mopin Technology Co., Ltd., has entered into a strategic partnership with the Wo Store of China Unicom (News - Alert).

This is the official application store of China's second largest mobile operator. Under the terms of the agreement, Sky-mobi was designated as an official business partner of China Unicom to provide customized and tailor-made software services at China Unicom's network of physical stores nation-wide.

Just shy of a month, the British telecommunications company, Vodafone (News - Alert), sold all of its interest in Verizon Wireless to Verizon Communications. This looks like it was a very sweet deal for everyone concerned. Vodafone has not wasted any time to reflect on this sale.

Vodafone agreed on Monday to buy the Spanish cable company Ono for about $10 billion. Vodafone signed a similar agreement last year to buy the German cable operator Kabel Deutschland. It would seem that the British company is investing heavily in the cable market.

Just behind Telefonica (News - Alert), Ono is considered to be the second largest service provider in Spain. The telecom operator market in Europe is going through a shake-up. A French mobile and fixed-line operator might also be on the market. So you can see that this seems to be a volatile time for this market in Europe.

Augmedix is a service that is powered by Google Glass. Earlier this week, the company announced that it has received venture funding from DCM (News - Alert) and Emergence Capital Partners. Through its association with Google Glass, Augmedix can not only record information during a patient's visit, but that information can then be stored and recovered later via voice command.

This puts Google Glass squarely in the healthcare industry. Augmedix will utilize its VC funding to expand its team and ramp up its efforts to reach outpatient doctors across the nation. The company is revenue generating and working with a select number of national health systems.

Yandex (News - Alert) is considered to be the Internet giant in Russia. It seems to dominate Russia’s search engine market. KitLocate is an Israeli startup that develops geolocation technology for mobile devices. Yandex will integrate KitLocate's eight-person team into its mobile search group, as it has just purchased the company.

In addition to the fact that if a Yandex user searches for “Teremok” (a Russian fast food chain), KitLocate’s tech will kick in and serve up suggestions based on where the user is, what really makes KitLocate’s geolocation software such a catch is that it saves your mobile device’s battery life.

Integra is a company that provides facilities-based communications and network services to enterprises, SMBs, government agencies and carriers throughout the western United States. It provides fiber-based, carrier-grade networking, communications and technology solutions.

This week, Integra acquired ProTel NetWorks which is a unified communications managed services provider, as well as being one of the largest Mitel dealers in the country. The goal of the acquisition is to extend its hosted and managed business communications offerings.
