Drivers in Tennessee Can Access Driving Records Online

By Michael Guta, TMCnet Contributing Writer

If there's one thing that virtually everybody agrees on its that the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) was created to intentionally exasperate, irritate, incense, enrage and rile (all great synonyms) us for the simple act of getting an identification card or a drivers license. Thankfully technology has come to the rescue once again and online services are available. Eventually almost all the services the DMV provides will be conducted online, and if we are really lucky it will be privatized, thereby eliminating the remaining inefficiencies completely and sparing us the trauma associated with this department.

The state of Tennessee is providing its residents an additional online DMV service to licensed drivers. Commissioner Bill Gibbons announced the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security have implemented an online service allowing citizens to obtain their official driving records. Anyone with a drivers license in the state of Tennessee will be able to access up to three years of their driving history.

The state and the department collaborated with NIC (News - Alert), provider of official government websites, online services, and secure payment processing solutions, to develop the online application and provide the service to residents. In addition to this new service NIC also provides other online DMV services for the state including driver license renewals, reinstatement payments and driver license address changes.

Each online transaction will be assessed a two dollar convenience fee by NIC along with a five dollar states fee set by the General Assembly in order to obtain a copy of the driving record.

NIC Inc. and its innovative eGovernment services has introduced a new level of efficiency to government agencies, citizens, and businesses across the country. It provides affordable eGovernment solutions for more than 3,500 federal, state, and local agencies in the United States. Currently it is managing the official website for 29 states with eServices by simplifying many of the functions residents need from local and state level government.

"Giving Tennesseans the choice of instantly accessing their driving histories supports our customer-focused priority goal of reducing wait time at the driver service centers. Reducing the need to go to a driver service center for this simple transaction will result in shorter wait times for customers who need the assistance of a staff member for a more complicated transaction," said Gibbons.
