Apkudo Acquires Testing Service Blue Potato

By David Delony, Contributing Writer

Apkudo, a device quality assurance company based in Baltimore, has acquired Blue Potato, a San Diego-based testing and certification company.

Both companies are optimistic about their future together.

“The fit couldn't be better," Josh Matthews, Apkudo co-founder and CEO said. "The joining of these two innovative companies greatly expands our offering and now allows an approach to traditional testing through the lens of experience testing."

While Blue Potato might have a silly name, the focus on interoperability is completely serious, as mobile devices challenge the Wintel hegemony. Blue Potato designs use the company’s knowledge of device certification and testing in North America to make the process of interoperability and approval testing as smooth as possible. The company provides functional device testing as a managed service. The idea is to let device makers concentrate on building devices and outsource the actual testing.

"Device interoperability, testing and certification are constant challenges, especially for OEMs entering the U.S. market," said Stan Scheufler, COO of Blue Potato. "We are excited to join the Apkudo team, who share the same core principles of making it easier for OEMs and wireless operators of all sizes to offer the latest devices and deliver the best possible user experience to their subscribers."

Apkudo Approved is a comprehensive analytics suite that helps manufacturers deliver easy-to-use, compatible devices. The company’s impressive list of clients includes device makers Samsung (News - Alert), Sony, HTC, and LG. The company also works with a number of major carriers including MetroPCS, Cricket, Cincinnati Bell, and the Associated Carrier Group.

The company also recently announced its Apkudo Approved for Accessories, extending, as the name suggests, to accessory makers.

“With Apkudo Approved for Accessories, wireless operators, distributors and retailers can improve customer satisfaction, reduce returns, and optimize accessory portfolios. Apple has 'Made for iPhone,' and now Android (News - Alert) has Apkudo Approved for Accessories,” Matthews said in September.
