Clumsy Ninja Brings iOS App Store's First Gameplay Trailer

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

Apple (News - Alert) has quietly brought a brand new feature to the iOS app store. The company is rolling out this new feature fairly slowly, but it does herald rather large changes. This new feature is apparently the ability to offer up short trailers for app developers.

The first application to get itself a short trailer was a game called Clumsy Ninja. This game has been taking a while rolled out itself, in fact, as it was first announced at the iPhone 5 keynote back in 2012.

The game has been featured as an app store Editor’s Choice in the US, the UK and other countries around the world. While Clumsy Ninja is a fun little game, it’s the change in iOS app store policy that is grabbing the most buzz. Before the release of this trailer feautre, developers were only allowed to show off their apps using up to five different photos of what the application could do.

While this feature should be a welcome change for developers that are trying to drum up interest for their games, it’s still not even remotely widespread. The Clumsy Ninja trailer is not even included in the official page yet. Rather, it is only visible when going to a special “featured” page for the app.

The ability to offer up trailers has been one of the most often requested features of the Apple iOS store. While some applications can explain what they are and what they do through photos, other developers say there is simply not enough room to show off their wares. If videos become the norm for applications in the iOS store, there will be more developers having success reaching the customers they need.

Business users and personal users alike are becoming more refined in what kind of applications they are going to buy for their iOS devices. Developers need to be able to stand apart from the crowd, and being able to show off trailers could be the way to do just that.
