A Picture Tells a Thousand Words, and Some Crimes, Too

By Nicole Spector, Contributing Writer

One of the major perks of using social media sites like Tumblr and Instagram, is that you can brag about the ongoings in your life via cell phone pics. Have a chance meeting with a Rolls Royce, take a pic! Post it! But if you want to be taken seriously as the biggest boaster of them all, get in the photo, too.

Wait, unless the phone you are using to photo-document your fantabulous day at the laundromat is stolen. In that event, do not, lowly thief, get in the picture.

Alas, this news came too late for one Dubai resident named Hafid. Buzzfeed has tossed up one of its signature lists honoring (and by honoring, we mean humiliating — it is Buzzfeed, after all) the young thief who was ousted by his own inane actions.

Hafid either didn't know, or carelessly overlooked the fact that many smartphone users have dropbox apps, so that pictures they take with their phones are automatically uploaded to the Internet. It's pretty helpful if you say, lose your phone and want to at least recover the pictures. Oh, it's also helpful if your phone is ever stolen and the crook that nabbed it upload photos of himself onto your account.

The victim has been having a ball on Tumblr posting Hafid's smug photos and videos alongside snide commentary. The Tumblr author has endless material to work with. Hafid posts mockable photos of himself displaying what can only be described as bling and videos enacting solo dance moves. Sometimes, though, the Tumblr writer crosses some snark lines, ridiculing Hafid's humble apartment and apparently highly-budgeted lifestyle.

Some of the commentary is funny, and it makes sense that the victim would be angry, but sometimes the material is so snobby, it makes just as much sense that such people are targeted to begin with.
