PRISM Helps Video Chat Service Paltalk Boost Visibility in the Marketplace

By Ashok Bindra, TMCnet Contributor

While it is well known that networking giants like Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Skype (News - Alert), YouTube and Apple were under the surveillance project of the NSA’s PRISM program, there were also many small services being observed. And one such service that took advantage of this infamous connection is Paltalk (News - Alert). Unlike others, this obscure company is bragging about its PRISM connection to boost its visibility in the market, reports the New York Times.

Founded more than a decade ago, Patalk is a video group chat service that enables members to communicate via video, Internet chat and voice. It boasts over five million global members and is undergoing renovation to expand its market share. In addition, it has released a new tablet app to further increase the customer base.

The report suggests that Paltalk is exploiting its PRISM fame by reminding reporters of the company’s inclusion in the NSA’s Internet spying project. In a pitch made to reporters about the Paltalk’s new apps recently, it reminded them of the company’s inclusion in PRISM, wrote NYT reporter Claire Cain Miller.

Speaking to NYT, Paltalk’s chief operating officer Wilson Kriegel told the reporter that “It might have made people talk more about us, but it deters from what we’re trying to do in the market.”

Meanwhile, the company also earned a mention on the Colbert Report, an American satirical late night TV program that airs Monday through Thursday on Comedy Central. And the NYT article indicates that a major contributor to this visibility must have been the PRISM connection.

According to the NYT report, Paltalk’s popularity is due its ability to allow an unlimited number of people in group chats. Such services are not available through Skype, Google (News - Alert) Plus or other similar programs. As per this report, majority of people are using Paltalk’s chat rooms to talk to other people they may not know on topics like karaoke, sports or dating. Paltalk generates revenues when members upgrade to the subscription level. Additionally, the report shows that it also generates revenue by selling virtual goods and ads.

Media reports show that Paltalk’s over five million monthly active users are split amongst the U. S., Europe and the Middle East. The website’s foreign traffic may have prompted the NSA to monitor its activities.
