AVG Technologies Focuses on Securing Small Businesses, Consumers

By Ashok Bindra, TMCnet Contributor

At the recent CTIA 2013 show in Las Vegas, AVG Technologies’ senior security evangelist Tony Anscombe met with TMC’s (News - Alert) CEO Rich Tehrani to discuss his company’s cutting-edge mobile security solutions. To bring TMC readers up-to-date with the newest offerings in anti-virus and security software, Anscombe first talked about the company’s expansion into the Android (News - Alert) utilities sector with the introduction of Image Shrinker and Cleaner software.

As the name implies, Image Shrinker lets users quickly shrink images stored natively on their Android devices in a few steps, so they can be more easily shared via social media or sent in text messages and emails, explained Anscombe. Likewise, Cleaner provides a means to cut down on the small files cluttering your handset, including items stored in your CPU’s cache, browser history and even your saved text messages and calls, added Anscombe.

Continuing to talk about AVG, the security evangelist then moved on to the acquisition of online privacy company PrivacyChoice, which was founded in 2009 with a primary mission to make privacy easier.

For the past four years, PrivacyChoice has been helping people around the world take control of their privacy through Web and browser-based tools. It provides both B2C and B2B tools, of which the flagship is the consumer-based Web application, Privacyfix. Aimed at addressing web users’ privacy concerns, it allows users to manage their privacy settings across Facebook (News - Alert), Google, LinkedIn and many other such websites.

Going forward, Tehrani asked Anscombe to expand on the recent survey conducted by AVG.  Answering the curiosity, Anscombe said that the idea behind this survey was to see how people are living in the digital world using their mobile devices. Highlighting the findings of this global study by AVG, the security evangelist told the CEO that more and more women are using technology to form and manage their relationships. For this study about 4000 women in the U.K., the U.S., Canada, France, Germany and Brazil were surveyed by AVG.

The discussion then moved on to security in the BYOD environment. Anscombe indicated that securing your mobile device in this environment is super important for both the parties. In fact, he added, the company must have a prerequisite for using mobile devices in the work environment as it can be easily lost with company data sitting in it.
