A Facebook Virus That Drains Bank Accounts

By Robbie Pleasant, TMCnet Contributor

Facebook (News - Alert) users, there’s a virus out there that you’ve got to keep a cautious eye out for. While there are plenty of annoyances on Facebook, such as pictures that try to guilt you into “Liking” them to draw traffic to a page, or that one friend who keeps posting conspiracy theories without fact-checking at Snopes, none of them can affect your bank account. The Zeus virus, on the other hand, can and will drain your account.

How the virus works is simple. It’s spread through phishing messages that infect one’s account and send messages or links to multiple friends, with a message like “Hey, check out this video” or “I can’t believe this is you.” If you receive a message like that, whatever you do, don’t click on it or else you’ll get infected too.

Once infected, the account will then send out more messages, getting more victims infected, and will remain dormant until you log in to your bank account. From there, it will capture your account and password and drain it of every last cent.

On some occasions, it can copy a bank website in order to gain social security numbers among other information, which it can then abuse or sell. While it has been around since 2007, Facebook has not been doing much to address the problem, meaning it’s up to us to not let it spread.

There’s good news for Mac and Linux users, though, as Zeus targets Windows machines only. Of course, considering how many people use Windows, there are still many computers at risk.

So once again, I must stress how important it is to stay smart and stay safe online. If a friend sends a suspicious link, don’t just click it without thinking; ask them what it’s about and make sure it’s really them. It just takes a little precaution and a little common sense to avoid losing everything, so until computer viruses are no more, it’s best to err on the side of caution.
