Firefox 21 Provides Added Do Not Track Options

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

There are several improvements found in the latest version of Firefox – such as added Do Not Track (DNT) options.

Firefox 21 includes a feature that is called “three state Do Not Track.” Users can ask not to be tracked as they visit different sites, allow themselves to be tracked, or not say anything about tracking.

The tracking feature relates to the use of tracking cookies – and has been useful for advertising data.

Back in January, Mozilla (News - Alert) reported in a blog post that “many people are voicing their desire to opt-out” of the tracking feature. But not everyone does.

“It’s reasonable to expect some people want the tracking to improve the quality of ads they see; after all, the goal of this feature is to help each individual say what they want, whether it’s pro-tracking or not,” the blog post added.

As of March, Firefox also released data on Do Not Track, which showed The Netherlands had 20.41 percent opting for DNT, followed by the United Kingdom with 19.4 percent opting for DNT and Canada with 18.28 percent – for the desktop. When it comes to mobile devices DNT – France had 21.17 percent, Australia had 19.55 percent and New Zealand had 19.05 percent.

“Mozilla Firefox, Firefox for Android (News - Alert), Firefox OS and Thunderbird all include a Do Not Track feature that enables users to express a preference not to be tracked online,” according to a Mozilla dashboard. “When the feature is turned on in one of our products, an automated signal is sent to all the sites and services you interact with, including websites, widgets, advertisers and applications. Do Not Track is still in an early stage of development across the industry. However, it is supported by all major browsers and a few leading companies have started respecting the signal.”

Do Not Track comes after 2003’s Do Not Call law, which let consumers sign up for a Federal Trade Commission registry not to receive most telemarketing calls.

Beyond Do Not Track in its newest version, Firefox is adding Cliqz, Mixi, msnNOW and Facebook (News - Alert) Messenger – which gives users more social media options, according to a recent blog post from Mozilla.

Cliqz provides users articles and videos based on their interests. Mixi lets users remain in contact with a social network. It is now limited to users in Japan. And msnNOW provides content related to popular and breaking trends from news and social media sites.

Also, under the new Firefox version there will be a Firefox Health Report. It keeps users informed on Firefox performance. It also lets Mozilla find out about performance experienced by individual users.
