The Horror! OkCupid and the User-Generated Questions

By Nicole Spector, Contributing Writer

Looking for love in the digital age? Chances are you've moseyed on over to OkCupid, the dating site and app that sports five million monthly users, and set yourself up a snazzy profile. You've picked a handful of flattering pictures (some of which blatantly crop out your crummy ex), and supplied a variety of semi-personal information about yourself to let those boys or girls or both know you're a real catch.

But who needs love when you can find psychosis? What's a soul mate when you can find a serial killer?

That seems to be what's going on behind a lot of OkCupid's user-generated questions, and the disturbing answers they beckon.

Anna Attkisson, a contributor at Laptopmag.com, wrangles with some of the creepier of these unsettling questions. Here, I address a few that Attkisson found to be among the sickest or weirdest questions.

"In a certain light, wouldn't nuclear war be exciting?"

Attkisson, clearly doesn't think so, and says that anyone asking this question is probably looking for someone who would answer “Yes, it would” – the only other choice other than the rule out “No, it wouldn't.” That, Attkisson argues is “terrifying.” I believe I have gone out with some of the men who have answered “Yes, it would,” to that question, and I have to say while I didn't get the vibe that they would “skin [me] and wear [my] body as a suit,” I did get the vibe that they had the emotional intelligence of a sandbag.

"Do you think women have an obligation to keep their legs shaved?"

Okay, so Attkisson totally hates on this one and I dig why, but let's face it, there are a lot of men and women who subscribe to antiquated gender stereotypes. Isn't it better that they find each other rather than go wasting the time of the worldly and liberated?

"Which is worse: starving children or abused animals?"

Oh, man, vegetarians hate this one! And so does Attkisson, though her eating preferences are not noted in her bio. I agree that the “Neither, both are good” option shows someone is either clearly sociopathic or less clearly into joking.

"Would you ever eat something out of the trash?"

“Um, gross,” is Attkisson's response. But I don't think this one is so bad – starving people in the world and all.

"STALE is to STEAL as 89475 is to..."

Attkisson feels that though “this is a weird question in the sense that it tells you nothing about a person’s personality… if you answered 89754, [she'd] probably consider a date with you.” Me? I would avoid this question at all costs because it looks like math.

Attkisson is fair in pointing out that there are probably a good deal of sociopaths on OKCupid (hey, 25 percent of the population, some psychiatrists claim), but I think that a lot of these questions are designed to eliminate those who would opt for the creepiest answer from the pool of consideration.

After all, if I saw some seemingly dreamy dude that was totally meant to be my husband, and then I saw that he thought I had been invented from man's rib to keep my legs smooth, well, then it would be a good thing that I found that out sooner rather than later.
