Netflix Gets the Wachowskis to Make 'Sense8', a Sci-Fi Series

Providing services for a product that has a large following is a sure fire way to guarantee a degree of success. Whether the product is a person or an item, if it is properly marketed the fans of that product will give it a chance. This formula has not eluded Netflix because they have been creating original programming with proven actors, directors and shows that aired in the past that were successful but were canceled for financial or other reasons. In signing Andy and Lana Wachowski, they have acquired the makers of arguably one of the best Sci-Fi films of all time, the first Matrix.

Sci-Fi fans are responsible for making the most obscure television show or movie succeed beyond the dreams of the creators. Whether it is movies like Logan’s Run, 2001, Blade Runner and Aliens or TV shows such as Star Trek and Babylon 5, this is a very lucrative market.

Currently, Netflix’s original programming includes House of Cards and Lilyhammer, but it has eight new shows slated for this year: Arrested Development, Sense8, Orange (News - Alert) Is The New Black, Derek, Narcos, Hemlock Grove, Bad Samaritans and Turbo: F.A.S.T. (Fast Action Stunt Team). These shows will be available as part of the company’s Internet video service for subscribers which costs $8 per month.

This new approach and marketing drive by Netflix has resulted in the price of the stock going from $63 on June 11, 2012 to $190.24 at the close on Wednesday.

The news of the Wachowskis joining the company will definitely make the stock more attractive as more subscribers will be signing up to see their creation, and more subscribers mean more revenue. With more than 33 million worldwide subscribers, Netflix has a lot of potential for growth, because the company incorporates the latest technology and platforms to deliver its contents, giving the consumer multiple options to view the entertainment of their choice.

Sense8 is going to be a 10 episode run due out late next year and according to Netflix it is "a gripping global tale of minds linked and souls hunted." Another talent with a great following on the show will be J. Michael Straczynski, the creator of Babylon 5, which had a loyal and fervent fan base.

"We're excited to work with Netflix and Georgeville Television on this project, and we've wanted to work with Joe Straczynski for years, chiefly due to the fact his name is harder to pronounce than ours, but also because we share a love of genre and all things nerdy. Several years ago, we had a late night conversation about the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us, and out of that paradox Sense8 was born,” said Andy and Lana Wachowski.

“Andy and Lana Wachowski and Joe Straczynski are among the most imaginative writers and gifted visual storytellers of our time. Their incredible creations are favorites of Netflix members globally, and we can’t wait to bring Sense8 to life,” said Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos.
