Gowex Deploys Free Wi-Fi in New York City

By Shawn Hebert, TMCnet Contributing Writer

New York City's biggest neighborhoods will soon have nearly 2,000 new free Wi-Fi smart zones thanks to wireless smart cities provider Gowex. The European-based company looks to deploy free Internet access throughout the hundreds of hotspots spread out between Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn and the Bronx.

New York is the largest market in the United States and has the potential to reach 50 million residents and tourists that live and pass through the city every day. Gowex's CEO Jenaro Garcia said that offering service in New York is a dream come true and is one step closer to their goal of covering North America as thoroughly as the company currently covers the European region.

“Offering free Internet in Times Square, Broadway, Fifth Avenue or Park Avenue thanks to a 100 percent Spanish project is an honor”, stated Garcia.

To take advantage of the free Wi-Fi Gowex connection, users will have to have previously downloaded the Gowex mobile app on their iOS or Android (News - Alert) device. The app offers a smart zone map, thematic specific theme channels and city centric information pages. The data download speed for free users will cap at 1MB per second. The network will also allow 3G network operators to offload the data traffic through Gowex hotspots in order to relieve the stress on their systems that come from being saturated with a high number of connections. The company recently announced that agreements have been made with AT&T and Deutsche Telekom (News - Alert), parent company of T-Mobile USA.

Gowex is not alone when it comes to free Wi-Fi deployment. Earlier this year, Google (News - Alert) announced a free Wi-Fi deployment in Chelsea and the meatpacking district. The Silicon Valley giant offers free Internet connection to the 2.000 citizens and thousands of visitors in this district.

New York Senator Chuck Schumer said the initiative would help draw more high-tech firms and workers to the neighborhoods, creating a new “Silicon Alley.”
