By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

For streaming audio and video to television sets, there are two set top boxes that appear to be the kings of the hill. The Apple TV set top box might have set the standard when it came to this kind of technology, but Roku is also a top contender.

Roku has had so much success that the device recently got named one of the most innovative devices in the world. One of Roku’s applications, Popcornflix, recently announced that it hit the 400,000 download mark on Roku devices.

Roku was recently launched in the UK and Canada which has certainly helped the popularity of its applications featured on the device. Popcornflix is an application that allows users to watch a ton of theatrically released titles as well as several indie flicks. Users can search movies by title, actor or even directors in variety of different genres.

"We're very excited about bringing Popcornflix to the Roku audience especially as Roku expands into Canada and the United Kingdom," said Gary Delfiner , SVP of Screen Media Digital, a division of Screen Media Ventures, LLC, parent company of Popcornflix. "Roku offers the best streaming player on the market, and we're proud to provide access to hundreds of free films for Roku's customers."

Popcornflix is a free application, which relies on ad revenue. Popcornflix has been successful enough on the Roku device that it is expanding into other platforms. Most recently, Popcornflix launched free applications for the iOS platform.
