Nvidia Plans to Open New Headquarters with Impressive Design

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

Nvidia plans to open an impressive 1 million square-foot headquarters in Santa Clara, Calif.

It will include two buildings – shaped like triangles – which the company says link “science and art.” The interior will allow for employee collaboration, online comments said.

The new design was released as Apple (News - Alert) plans to open its own new spaceship-style headquarters.

Nvidia submitted the plans for its office to Santa Clara officials for review, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. It will be located, if approved, on a 24-acre parcel.

If given the go-ahead, Nvidia will begin construction on the first 500,000-square-foot building in June, and it would open in July 2015. It will be on San Tomas Expressway, across from the company’s present headquarters.

“Our headquarters in Santa Clara, just a few blocks from where we started, barely has a spare desk. … We’re absolutely bursting at the seams,” Chief Executive Officer Jen-Hsun Huang said in a recent blog post. “So we’ve decided to build a new campus right across the street, one as distinctive as our company.”

The new building will feature “a shape that connects with and inspires our employees – a triangle, the fundamental building block of computer graphics,” Huang said in the blog. “The new Nvidia building will capture the ambition and imagination of our people. It will stand at the intersection of science and art, just as our work in visual computing does. It will be the symbol, the physical manifestation, of our vision for the company.”

The new office (likely just the first building) will reportedly cost $300 million, according to Bloomberg Businessweek. The second building has yet to be discussed in detail.

In addition, Nvidia's expansion shows that the Silicon Valley tech boom is ongoing, according to the Bloomberg (News - Alert) report.

"We see no slowdown in 2013," Justin Hedberg, a first vice president with Kidder Mathews, told Bloomberg. "There is a lot of demand for big blocks of space. There are a lot of companies out there right now looking for large spaces."

Nvidia now has about 8,000 employees worldwide and the first new building could allow for adding another two thousand employees.

Gensler’s Hao Ko will design the new campus.

Nvidia is best known for its chips and video products, and recently released a fourth generation gaming console called "Project Shield," TMCnet reported.

On the other hand, Apple’s planned new complex is a four-story, ring-shaped building with a lot of landscape, eWeek reported.
