The Wonders of Skype

By Ashley Caputo, TMCnet Web Editor

Videoconferencing (or video chatting) is one of those really life-changing creations in technology that has had positive effects in worldwide communication, whether it is for personal, business or educational use. This technology allows for both audio and video interaction between users in different locations, using platforms like Skype (News - Alert), which allows three or more parties to be involved.

With a world so vast and the opportunity to travel, personal relationship with loved ones, friends and families can become strained or weakened because of distance. Take for instance mega superstar Jennifer Lopez, who travels all around with world for concert and music tours, bringing along her two children. This puts the children at great lengths of distance from their father, Marc Anthony, as the pair was recently divorced. However, in the wake of innovational technology, Lopez found a way to keep her children in direct contact with their father: Skype.

Skype is the most coveted videoconferencing platform, as it is a free video calling and instant messaging service that requires an internet connection. Skype is available to use from almost every device, including your computer, mobile, table, TV and home phone, there is no limit to how much you can communicate, especially if it is for your own personal use.

Face to face interaction creates a form of intimacy and social bonding that the simple sound of a voice cannot do. This comes into play if you are interviewing or meeting someone for the first time, especially for business purposes. Since Skype is capable of group video calling, business ventures can be completed between people who live on different parts of the world.

In the educational world, students can take class trips virtually without distance being an issue; there is no limit on world travel that classrooms can take. As the thirst for worldly knowledge increases with the creation of the Internet, videoconferencing has quenched it. Not only can students read and see images through the Internet, they are now equipped to see live interactions.

And the most important effect of using videoconferencing technologies offer is the ability to replace physical interaction with the closest form of human interaction.
