Barry Judge Joins LivingSocial as Marketing Specialist

By Frank Griffin, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Not too long ago Best Buy (News - Alert) was doing well; it was almost inconceivable to think it would be going through its current bouts of trouble. For almost two decades, the company was beating expectations even while other companies, such as Amazon, were making strong strides. CMO, Barry Judge, however, has since moved on from the organization, joining LivingSocial to spearhead several of its Web-based marketing initiatives.

Though Best Buy is experiencing some low stock prices and decreasing market share compared to its past, the company is still doing well, surely keeping Judge’s priorities to competitive success high in the new projects he’ll be taking up at LivingSocial (News - Alert).

Barry Judge worked at Best Buy for more than 13 years and was promoted to CMO in 2008, prior to leaving in May 2012. He joined the company when it launched BestBuy.com, its online retail division.

LivingSocial is going through some turmoil at the moment. The deal aggregating market itself and Groupon are not faring well. While Groupon is under six dollars a share, Amazon has lost $169 million dollars on its $175 million buy-in into LivingSocial.

Judge will be in charge of the advertising for the company’s online and offline outlets, brand management, social media and other marketing duties.

"No other company in the local commerce landscape combines LivingSocial’s broad reach, deep consumer and merchant relationships, and strong reputation. My career has been spent inventing and reinventing great brands, and LivingSocial has a unique opportunity to build a new industry from scratch by helping millions of local customers discover and share the best things to do in their cities,” Judge said in a release.

The hiring of Judge comes at a time when the company is facing great scrutiny to make noticeable improvements to its overall operations in what seems to be a questionable market at the moment. The global operation of the company in a tight economic climate, 400 fewer employees and bad press will all make the task at hand very difficult indeed for Judge.
