Record Downloads from the Apple App Store

By Joe Rizzo, TMCnet Contributing Writer

On December 31, 2012, Mobility Techzone reported that all records were broken with the amount of app downloads on Christmas day. According to Apple (News - Alert), the App Store now has over 500 million active accounts and 775,000 applications available to customers. This led to them to make the announcement that there have been over 40 billion unique application downloads in its App Store since its launch in 2008. Thanks to the Christmas record of two billion apps downloaded, 20 billion of the overall downloads occurred in 2012.

This is impressive since in March 2012 Apple was at the 25 billion mark and 30 billion downloads by June. It seems that they have been averaging about a five billion increase every four months and then Christmas came. Apple’s SVP of Internet Software and Services, Eddy Cue said, “It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community. Developers have made over $7 billion on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world.”

Apple said that expanded iOS offerings from companies such as Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Autodesk (News - Alert), Marvel and Major League Baseball helped to bring the App Store past 40 billion downloads. Temple Run, a mobile game developed by a husband and wife team at Imangi Studios, was downloaded over 75 million times. Two new companies, Backflip Studio and Supercell brought in over $100 million with their games.

Research firm Flurry Analytics says that there will be acceleration in app downloads that will continue over the next 12 months. They predict that between iOS and Android (News - Alert) over one billion mobile programs will be downloaded each week between now and the fourth quarter of 2013. Next year, Flurry Analytics is expecting a combined two billion apps to be downloaded each week.

Apple has always stayed away from CES (News - Alert), this year is no exception. By announcing that they broke all records in app sales they are trying to steal some headlines away from CES 2012, which is starting this week in Las Vegas.
