Mayer Spearheads Fresh Redesign to Yahoo! Mail Interface

By David Gitonga, TMCnet Contributing Writer

According to recent statistics on the total use of e-mail services, Gmail seems to be the only service experiencing gains. From Hotmail all the way to Yahoo Mail, it’s been a downhill trend.

Fortunately, the relatively new Yahoo! CEO, Marissa Mayer, is keen on changing the old face of Yahoo Mail and pumping some fresh blood into the old mail train.

The new Yahoo Mail now sports a faster, cleaner design with easier navigation. Mayer is all too familiar with a solid e-mail product, having had a Google (News - Alert) background where its Gmail product is probably the source of many other Google innovations today.

In addition, e-mail is something we use daily. It thus makes perfect sense that the starting point of the redesign process would begin with Yahoo! Mail.

Speaking on the redesigned Yahoo! Mail, Mayer highlighted on the Yahoo! Blog the importance of e-mail, suggesting it is one of those few things we check in the morning and the last thing we check before going to bed.

E-mail, she says, is “the simplest and most basic forms of communication” – hence the improvements, which will enable quick login on all major platforms, including Windows 8, iPhone (News - Alert) and Android.

The new Yahoo Mail has been redesigned with speed in mind, allowing users to get through their e-mail much more quickly. The new inbox is also more intuitive now, letting users focus on what matters most.

These traits follow suit on all mobile devices.

It is clear that Mayer has been listening to users and taking particular note of products that have a great impact on people’s online lives. While Yahoo! Mail may not be gaining Gmail users anytime soon, the company can look to keeping its remaining users loyal.
