Socl and Pheed Enter a Crowded Social Networking Market

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

If your particular social networking experience begins and ends with Facebook and Twitter (News - Alert), then you probably don’t realize just how many social networking sites currently exist on the Internet. Despite the fact that Facebook and Twitter have long been considered the kings of their respective hills, there is always an upstart or two that is trying to get in on the action. Two relatively new social networking sites in particular could make some noise if they carry out their missions just right.

Pheed is a new social networking site that has put Twitter directly in its crosshairs. The site launched in October and garnered enough attention from the media that have some wondering if it might become a real player in a few years. The site is currently being driven by its celebrity backing. The site has a large group of people who seemed to have signed on before the launch and that could at least continue to garner it some attention. Another factor that could push Pheed to the forefront is its ability to offer content for whatever fee you want. Users also have the ability to charge for live streaming broadcasts. This particular functionality is something that no other social networking site offers up quite so simply and bears keeping an eye on.

Microsoft (News - Alert) has launched its own social networking site, called Socl, which looks to be yet another competitor to Facebook. Like Google (News - Alert)+, this site could certainly stay in the public eye if for no other reason than its deep pockets from Microsoft. While Facebook might be the big pray Socl is aiming for, it is also apparently taking on Pinterest with its ability to share images quickly and easily.

Neither of the sites is going to be huge right out of the gate. Facebook (News - Alert) and Twitter simply have too much cache in the social networking world. Because both are taking on the market in slightly different ways however, there seems to be enough here that they deserve some attention.
