Samsung ATIV Smart PC Available from AT&T This Week

By Rory Lidstone, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Samsung (News - Alert) Telecommunications America recently released the Samsung ATIV smart PC in the U.S. exclusively for AT&T, while also releasing the previously available Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 with 4G LTE (News - Alert) capabilities on the network. Both will be released on November 9.

The latter tablet runs Android and has been available in Wi-Fi-only form for a while. The Samsung ATIV, however, is a brand new device running Windows 8 — no, not Windows RT, Windows 8. This means the tablet can run full Windows desktop applications as well as apps from the Windows app store. Although, powered by a dual-core 1.5GHz Intel (News - Alert) Atom processor, it seems unlikely the ATIV will be able to act as a mobile gaming rig.

This Windows tablet is an impressive device nonetheless, sporting an 11.6-inch HD PLS display, 64GB of internal storage with a microSD slot for additional, removable storage. The ATIV comes running standard Windows 8, but can be upgraded to Windows 8 Pro for an additional cost. It also comes with the trial version of Microsoft (News - Alert) Office 2010.

"We are excited to offer the Samsung ATIV smart PC in stores nationwide ahead of the holiday shopping season," said Chris Penrose, senior vice president, AT&T (News - Alert) Emerging Devices . "Connected by the nation's largest 4G network , this Windows 8 tablet gives customers optimized touch interface, instant live tile updates and PC capabilities."

For those that want to turn the ATIV into a true productivity machine, AT&T is selling a VGA adapter and a stand dock, which charges the device when docked and features a full-sized USB input as well as an Ethernet slot.

Samsung also recently unveiled a new promotion for its 840 Pro family of SSDs. For a limited time, customers who purchase a 128, 256 or 512GB 840 Pro SSD will also receive a free code for the downloadable version of the upcoming game Assassin's Creed III for PC.
