Zombies Invade the Future in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

By Rich Steeves, TMCnet Web Editor

Since the first installment of Call of Duty, the video game franchise has taken players through many different eras, from World War II and the Cold War to a taste of Modern Warfare. But the newest edition of the successful series, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, takes players even farther into the near future, featuring a host of future warfare technology. Plus – as if we could ask for more – a new video from developer Treyarch reveals that the shoot ’em up game will indeed be featuring one of my favorite pop culture elements (and a staple of games like Left 4 Dead and previous Call of Duty games). That’s right, we got our first taste of Black Ops 2’s ZOMBIE MODE.

The video, released on September 19 and seen below, shows off the new Zombie Mode, which, frankly, looks pretty cool. Check it out:

A large portion of the game is set in the “near future” of 2025 with other sequences set in the 1970s and 80s. From the trailer, it looks like the zombie invasion is going pretty poorly for the people of the future, with a post-apocalyptic landscape invaded by hordes of the living dead.

The latest iteration of Zombie Mode will feature new styles of gameplay, such as a survival mode that allows two teams of four to try and outlast one another against the hordes. That’s right; you’ll be able to play Zombie Mode with up to seven of your friends in a competitive, rather than cooperative environment.

The game is scheduled for a November 2012 release, and is available for preorder now. I, for one, will start stocking up on ammo for the coming zombie apocalypse. And I’ll pretend not to be too excited…
