Football, Foliage and Food: Three Must-Have Apps for Fall

By Brooke Neuman, TMCnet Copy Editor

The dog days of summer are finally behind us, and as we begin packing away our bathing suits and sandals, and unloading our favorite sweaters and boots, we are reminded of the things we love best about fall. Football, anything associated with the words “pumpkin spiced,” and beautiful fall foliage are just some of our favorite fall pastimes.

In order for you to take full advantage of the season, here’s a rundown of some fun, helpful autumn apps.

 U.S. Farmers Market Finder App

The smell of hot apple cider and freshly baked blueberry crisp is reminiscent of the fall season. For foodies and habitual bakers, Saturday afternoons are often spent in search of the season’s best ingredients. The U.S. Farmers Market Finder app guides you to the nearest farmers market in your area. The app lists over 2,500 farmers’ markets within the U.S., including states like California, Delaware, Florida, Maryland, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and more.

Whether you’re yearning for a freshly baked pumpkin pie or planning a road trip, this app will satisfy all your fall cravings. Using GPS features, the app takes your present location to help guide you to your market of choice. The app offers walking or driving directions with information on each unique market like parking availability, payment methods and dates and times of operation.

To ensure accurate results, all information provided through the app is drawn from the U.S. Department of Agriculture database. Compatible with the iPhone (News - Alert), iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 5.0 or later.

Tailgating Planner App

When the leaves change and the temperature begins to drop, you know its fall which means it’s time to unpack your Eli Manning jersey and prepare yourself for the long awaited NFL season. Whether you’re a Giants or Jets fan, every tailgater needs to enter the stadium or living room prepared. The Tailgating Planner app is a customizable planner that helps any tailgater, professional or amateur, organize everything they could possibly need for game day. Consisting of over 220 tailgate items, the user-friendly interface allows you to tailor your personal tailgating list by checking and un-checking specific items. Items can be color-coded and a pre-loaded list of items is included to save users time.

After the list is completed, users can share the list, or multiple lists, through e-mail. Users can also save lists to use at a later date.

This app will guarantee a stress-free tailgating experience, giving fans the opportunity to enjoy the game and avoid worrying about their freezing fingers or rumbling tummy. But don’t blame the app if your team’s kicker misses those two extra points! Compatible with Android (News - Alert) 1.5 and up.

Camera Awesome App

In addition to tasty foods and Monday Night Football, autumn brings with it picturesque landscapes and beautiful fall foliage. Although taking photos with your smartphone is convenient, they often appear grainy or unfocused. The Camera Awesome app is just that, awesome. The app is full of easy to use tools and effects that will have your pictures going from drab to fab. Pull down the interface tab to reveal tools to help focus your shot, or choose from several different effects. If you’re feeling extra creative, tap the thumbnail located in the bottom left corner to display the larger shot and use the magic wand to apply any effect. Users can even crop or rotate pictures within the app.

Similar to Instagram, the app has 36 different presets, filters, textures and frames to customize your photographs. Share photographs with your friends through eight different options including Facebook (News - Alert), Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, text or e-mail. Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 4.3 or later.
