Tech savvy parents likely rely on their mobile devices to capture moments of their little ones’ childhood. From fun days at the park to that first roll on the tummy, it’s never been easier to be on the ready to catch it all for loved ones to see.
For parents who rely on caregivers for day-to-day care, being there isn’t always an option. Social networking, texting and e-mail have all provided outlets for parents to see what their kids are up to, but keeping track of what gets posted where can be a daunting task.
That’s where Karoo comes in.
Karoo is a new app launched by the creators of Care.com, a site that provides a list of caregivers for children, adults and seniors and even pets. Karoo connects the caregiver right to the parent to share moments right as they happen, whether its eating an ice cream cone or taking a video of little Joey’s first steps.
What sets Karoo apart from sharing photos and videos via traditional methods is its ability to keep it all in one place without the worry of security, and logs everything chronologically. It eliminates the need to have to sort through texts and e-mails to find that one memory, and it’s all shared with the people you choose to share it with.
Karoo was born out of a need to find ways to stay connected throughout the day. Care.com polled its seven-million subscriber base and found that the biggest challenge among caregivers and parents was that everyday details were being missed.
“We view Karoo as a vital element to the family and caregiver equation,” said Joe Cuccinelli, VP of Product for Karoo in an interview with TMCnet.
I had the chance to preview Karoo before its official launch date on September 18, and as an avid texter and e-mailer of my son’s milestones, I have to say it was a nice change to be able to launch the app and put it all in one place.
Karoo is rather user-friendly as an app and doesn’t require an extensive tutorial. Its features comprise a “Timeline (News
- Alert),” similar to that of Facebook, although much easier and much more secure.

Similar to popular social networking outlets, Karoo offers a view of your own timeline, recent activity and who you’re following and who is following you. Users can add a location with their post as well.
Beyond just posting photos and videos of what’s gone on that day, Karoo features a Milestones button that allows the user to highlight those one-shot memories.
“With Milestones, you can call-out important once-in-a-lifetime moments such as first steps or the game winning goal. Karoo becomes a virtual journal for families and caregivers. Finally, it's a private communication tool. Parents pick who can receive the updates, and then they’re also able to share certain details more broadly,” said Cuccinelli.
Milestones that Karoo has in its database range from bath time to bedtime, all the way to potty time and even studying.
This program will help parents feel more connected to their little ones and caregivers without the worry of security and knowing that it’s all being preserved in one place. While nothing beats being there as all of the moments unfurl, using technology to virtually be there is a sure close second.
Karoo is available for download at no cost and only requires a login to Care.com.
